Call for Applications: Wanjiru Kihoro Fellowship Programme - Switzerland

Femmes Africa Solidarite (FAS), an NGO working to enhance women’s roles in peace building and conflict resolution on the African continent, in collaboration with the Swiss Foundation, offers a unique Fellowship opportunity to a young African woman or man looking to gain International experience in the fields of gender, peace and development.  THE WANJIRU KIHORO FELLOWSHIP will offer the candidate the opportunity to work for a period of 9 months at FAS’ International Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland before returning to put their skills into action through an additional 3 month placement with an NGO in Africa. Applicants should have a degree, or be currently undertaking studies, in a field relevant to the position (gender; development; international relations), or have substantial work experience in this area in an NGO environment. Applications must enclose the following documents:

  • A CV detailing educational and professional experience
  • An essay of approximately 800 words, detailing motivations for seeking the Fellowship;
    what he/she hopes to achieve ; and how this experience will be beneficial for future work
  • The names and contacts of two or three references

Helleiner Visiting Fellowship at The North-South Institute, Canada: Call for Proposals for 2009

The North-South Institute is pleased to invite applications for its annual Visiting Researcher position. The Fellowship is named after Professor Emeritus G.K. Helleiner, one of Canada ’s leading academics on international development issues, who has dedicated many years to working in Africa and other developing countries and is a founding member and former Chair of the North-South Institute.

The aim of the Helleiner Visiting Fellowship program, which is funded with the support of Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC), is to provide mid-career policy researchers (i.e. 5-10 years’ experience), whether presently working in a university, a policy research institute or a think-tank, or another relevant institution, with the opportunity to undertake policy-relevant research in an area that is compatible with the overall goals and areas of interest of The North-Institute. This year’s position is open to African policy researchers interested in spending from nine months to one year at the Institute, which is based in Ottawa , Canada . The proposed policy research should fall in one of the following three broad areas:

  1. International Finance, Debt, and Development Cooperation Effectiveness;
  2. Trade and Migration; and
  3. Governance, Civil Society, and Conflict Prevention.

Research that addresses issues of gender equality or sustainable development (including climate change) in any of these three areas are also encouraged.

The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), in partnership with the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the Ford Foundation are pleased to announce a new fellowship to support doctoral students at African universities. The African Doctoral Dissertation Research Fellowship (ADDRF) seeks to facilitate more rigorous engagement of doctoral students in research, strengthen their research skills, and provide the fellows an opportunity for timely completion of their doctoral training. The fellowship targets doctoral students with strong commitment to a career in training and/or research. This first call focuses on students whose theses address issues relating to heath systems strengthening in Africa


2007-2009 Africa Higher Education Collaborative:

Improving Resources for Access & Success in Africa The Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), a division of the Institute of International Education (IIE) and IIE’s Middle East North Africa (MENA) Region Office in Cairo are pleased to announce the Africa Higher Education Collaborative (AHEC) sponsored by the Ford Foundation. Through its unique collaborative and interactive design, this new initiative aims to contribute to the development of higher education within the countries of Egypt , Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa over a two-year period. The program expects to engage a new generation of higher education specialists in Africa by creating networks for information sharing and research while enhancing the regional and global perspectives of its participants.
